Alberta retailers offer plans that pay a premium rate for summer exports, paired with rate structures that make winter membership expensive, which is why members switch plans seasonally. The mechanics and current rates are plan-specific and change; verify the current terms on the retailer's own page before counting on any figure.

Because the same plan typically prices the power you buy higher too: in summer your exports outweigh imports and the premium works for you, while in winter you import heavily and the arithmetic reverses. The plans are built for seasonal switching, and staying put through a Prairie winter usually donates the summer's gains back.

At your own crossover: the point where the home stops exporting more than it imports, which monitoring shows within a month or two of operation. Calendar rules of thumb approximate it, but your production-consumption balance is the real signal, and a season's data makes the timing obvious.

Model it from your actual monthly exports, not by multiplying annual production by the headline rate: only exported kilowatt-hours earn the premium, and only in the months you hold the plan. For most homes it is a worthwhile bonus on top of solar's core savings, not a second business.

The premium narrows the battery's daily arbitrage, since exporting at a strong rate competes with storing for self-use. Batteries on club-style plans are bought mainly for backup and for the winter months on the other rate. Run the spread both seasons before assuming either answer.

Admin fees, the import rate riding alongside the export premium, switching restrictions and contract-length terms all trim the headline. Read the plan's full terms, confirm switching is as easy in practice as advertised, and count the fees against the premium before calling it a raise.
