Questions farmers actually ask
Will my barn roof carry panels?
Steel-clad post-frame buildings usually can, older wood-frame roofs need a structural look first. A serious installer checks purlin spacing and truss condition before quoting, not after. If the roof is doubtful, ground mount beats reinforcement almost every time.
Roof mount or ground mount?
Roof wins on cost when the building is sound and roughly south-facing. Ground wins on orientation, snow shedding, cleaning access and future expansion, at a modest cost premium for racking and trenching. Many farms end up with the shop roof first and a ground expansion later.
What happens during harvest or calving when nobody has time?
Nothing. A grid-tied system runs itself, there is no daily operation, and monitoring happens from a phone. Maintenance is an occasional visual check and keeping inverter vents clear.
Does snow on a barn roof array matter?
Less than expected. Panels shed snow faster than bare metal in sun, estimates already include winter losses, and your biggest production months are the ones without snow. Ground mounts at steeper tilt shed fastest of all.
What if the operation grows?
Say so during design. An inverter and service sized with headroom, or a ground layout with expansion rows planned, costs little now and saves real money when the dryer or the herd gets bigger.
Will it interfere with insurance?
Tell your farm insurer before install day. Arrays are routinely covered as farm structures or equipment, but disclosure keeps claims clean, and your installer should hand you the spec sheet the insurer asks for.
